Winner of the Write Like Chandler Contest Chosen

Sierra Madre, CA - February 23, 2015 - Sierra Madre resident Richard Bellikoff is the winner of the Sierra Madre Library’s “Write Like Chandler” contest. The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler, was Sierra Madre Public Library’s 2015 One Book, One City pick. The contest was one of the exciting events celebrating author Raymond Chandler and the LA Noir genre.

Bellikoff’s entry, “Strangers on a Trail”, written in Chandler’s narrative-first-person style, was selected by members of the One Book Once City committee, on the evening of Friday, February 13. Bellikoff received dinner for two at a local restaurant. Read his winning entry below.

Huck Finn Fishing Derby and Campout 2015

Sierra Madre, CA. – February 17, 2015 – The annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby and Campout will be here before you know it: Friday, March 27, 2015 – Sunday, March 29, 2015. The weekend long event is held at the Sierra Madre settling basins next to Dapper Field and behind the Public Works Yard. Best-selling Authors Highlight Discussion of Classic LA Noir Novel

Sierra Madre, CA. – February 3, 2015 – Popular, noted local authors will entertain with a lively panel discussion on “Raymond Chandler, Noir, and Los Angeles in the 1940s” on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 7:00 pm. The event at the Sierra Madre Public Library is part of Sierra Madre’s 2015 One Book One City program throughout the month of February. This year’s book is Raymond Chandler’s L.A. Noir classic The Long Goodbye, published in 1953, featuring famous detective, Philip Marlow.

Planning Commission Meeting to Consider R-1 Zoning Ordinance Amendments

Sierra Madre, CA. – February 2, 2015 - The Planning Commission will be holding a public hearing to consider amendments to the R-1 Single Family Residential Zoning Ordinance regarding revisions to the maximum allowable floor area based on lot size, changes to the conditional use permit (CUP) square footage threshold, elimination of the existing minimum floor area requirement, and a new requirement for a conditional use permit to allow any 2nd story addition or new construction proposing a second story, and limiting any second story to no greater than 75% of the first floor, including the garage.

Historical Fire Horn Restored and to be Blown Daily

Sierra Madre, CA. – January 30, 2015 Starting on Monday, February 2nd, the 75 year-old Fire Horn will once again be heard throughout the community on a daily basis. The Horn, which is located on North Baldwin Avenue within the East Montecito Public Parking Lot, will be blown every day at 5:00pm. During emergencies, the horn will go off in a series of three blasts. When residents hear the three blasts, they should take a moment to become aware of their surroundings, and tune in to the City’s Emergency Radio Station AM 1630 for information.
