State of the City Event on February 19, 2013

On Tuesday, February 19, 2013 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm the City of Sierra Madre will host its 3rd Annual State of the City address at the Community Recreation Center in the Sierra Madre Room at 611 East Sierra Madre Boulevard. This year’s theme is “Finding the Right Balance”; the event will highlight programs and services the City has provided over the past year and give residents insight to the City’s goals for the next fiscal year.

Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Walsh will emcee the evening. A special performance by Sierra Madre Elementary School Students will precede Mayor Josh Moran’s State of the City Address. Representatives from each City Department will be available to answer any community questions and a City booth will highlight current programs and projects.

Planning Commission to Consider Amendments to R-1 Single Family Residential Development Standards, 1-29-2013

The Planning Commission will be holding a public hearing to consider amendments to the R-1 Single Family Residential Zoning Ordinance regarding various definitions (attic, habitable attic space, bedroom, driveway, floor area, flag lot, and front lot line), permitted uses, setbacks, building floor area calculation, height, and parking, among other development standards. The Commission is also considering amendments to the Parking Ordinance regarding the number of spaces required, tandem parking, and pavement of parking areas. The Planning Commission meeting will be held on February 7, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., in the City Council Chambers at the Sierra Madre City Hall located at 232 West Sierra Madre Blvd. Some of the major proposed amendments include:

Importance of Calling 9-1-1

The City of Sierra Madre and neighboring communities are experiencing an increase in burgleries and other property crimes which is likely attributed to the California's corrections realignment plan, one of the most significant changes to California's criminal justice system in decades. City Officials and the Police Department want to remind residents to remain viligent and to immediately call 9-1-1 to report any crimes in progress.

Whale Watching Excursion

Join the Community Services Department for its annual Whale Watching excursion on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Enjoy a two and a half hour narrated tour by Aquarium of the Pacific staff, charter boat with a two level viewing deck, and transportation to and from Long Beach.
