How does a good parent sort out the good and the bad, the useful and harmful for their children in today’s electronic world? The Sierra Madre Public Library has an app for that! Several, actually.

Parents of young children are invited to Apps for Toddlers on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at 10:00 a.m.

Sierra Madre, CA – City of Sierra Madre Public Works staff has begun the first of three projects that will take place along the 600 block of East Grand View Avenue over the next few months. The first project consists of constructing a new, permanent entry to the spreading basin facility. The new gate will replace the existing entry that’s adjacent to Sycamore Place. The project includes removal of a portion of the old rubble perimeter wall around the facility and the construction of new entry pilasters using the wall materials. This project is designed to facilitate the two following projects.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, is the City’s 2013 One Book One City selection this February and a month of exciting free programs for all ages, with a World War II theme, is being planned at the Sierra Madre Public Library. Please join us at the library for the following free programs:

• Children’s Airplane Flying Contest. Saturday, February 2 at 10:00 a.m.
• WWII Historian - Dan King. On Saturday, February 9 at 10:00 a.m.
• Book Discussion Monday evening, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. & Thursday, February 21 at 11:00 a.m.
• WWII Veterans Share Their Stories. On Saturday, February 23 at 10:00 a.m.
• WWII Aircraft speaker from Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, Thursday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m.

Registration is now open for popular Parent/Child workshop series, slated for March 6, 13, 20, 27 and April 3 at 6:30 pm at the Sierra Madre Public Library.

Sessions will take place at the Library on consecutive Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. and will be interactive including toys, crafts, books and play in addition to discussions of parenting issues and concerns.

The parenting workshop will feature noted resource professionals from the community and each session will feature a different aspect of parenting, including early literacy, speech, hearing and language development, child development, nutrition, music, play, and health.

Families with children ages 36 months and younger are encouraged to register now as past workshops have filled up fast. Enrollment is free, but in-person pre-registration at the Library is required to ensure a spot in the program.

The City of Sierra Madre Community Services Department and the Senior Community Commission is seeking your assistance to find the 2013 Older ‘Sierra Madre’ American of the Year. Nominated individuals must live in Sierra Madre, demonstrate outstanding community service and be age 60 or older.
