Third Thursday Book Club
A Book Club for Adults
An informal roundtable discussion of a selected book takes place at the Library on the third Thursday of each month (except December) from 11 a.m. to noon. Directed by Library staff. A list of the selections is available at the Library Service Desk and can be viewed by clicking on the link below.
On Thursday, January 19, 2012, the club will discuss This Sweet Sickness, noted mystery author Patricia Highsmith’s eerie thriller about the grim consequences of obsession and self-delusion.
It’s the 1950s in Hudson Valley NY, and David Kelsey is a gifted young scientist stuck in a go-nowhere menial job. He spends his days obsessing over Annabelle, his ex-girlfriend, who is now married to another man. David deludes himself into thinking that she was and always will be “his,” and begins a campaign to recapture her affections. Annabelle’s polite but anemic rejection only serves to escalate his efforts, pushing him over the edge, with murderous results.
In February the club will discuss Sierra Madre’s 2012 One Book One City selection, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These classic “who-dunnit” stories by Conan Doyle, who is widely regarded as a pioneer of the Mystery genre, introduced Sherlock Holmes, an unusually cerebral, shrewd and brilliant detective, and his well-meaning assistant Dr. Watson, who, respectively, became the most beloved sleuth and “sidekick” in literary history.
The club meets every third Thursday of the month at 11:00 a.m. in the Library Reference Room. A schedule of upcoming selections is available at the Library Service Desk and on the website: www.sierramadre.lib.ca.us. Funded by the Friends.
