Former Mayor and Council Member George Maurer passes away at 98 years old

George MaurerThe City is saddened to announce the passing of former Mayor George Maurer on February 14, 2021. Mayor Maurer was 98.

Mr. Maurer served 12 years as a Council Member and as Mayor of the City of Sierra Madre three times; from 1990 to 1991, from 1995 to 1996, and again from 2005 to 2006.

During his lifetime, Mayor Maurer committed much of his time to volunteering and public service. In addition to George Maurer’s service on the City Council and Planning Commission, he was also a member of the Sierra Madre Volunteer Fire Department for 19 years and was active in many civic organizations, including the Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club.

Maurer was awarded the first ever Sierra Madre Lifetime Service Award at the 2016 Sierra Madre Honor’s Award Reception. The award in his name has been awarded to an outstanding volunteer at every Sierra Madre Honors Award Ceremony since then.

Until recently Mayor Maurer was often seen around town on his scooter. George Maurer loved Sierra Madre and always had a welcoming smile. Mr. Maurer will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, volunteerism, and champion of many causes.

“Mayor George Maurer was an iconic legend of Sierra Madre,” said Mayor Rachelle Arizmendi. “His loss will leave a void in our community but his footprint will remain in the governance of our City, former volunteer Fire Department, emergency operations, and civic activities. We will miss our resident historian dearly. The City Council offers our sincerest condolences to Mayor Maurer’s family and all of his Sierra Madre friends that knew and loved him.”
